SOCIAL JUSTICE
ONCE SOCIAL
CHANGE BEGINS..
it cannot be reversed, you cannot un-educate the person that has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person that feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.”
-Cesar Chavez
A diverse workforce alone isn’t enough to create educational equity.
THE INTERSECTION OF SOCIAL JUSTICE, AND YOUR CLASSROOM.
Educators of Color have the ability to connect to all students, but research shows this connection is specifically beneficial to students of color whose culture and identity is eliminated from the education experience in America.
The student population currently is roughly 50 percent minority/people of color, while the teacher population is now 18 percent of color. Closing the diversity gap would require about a million white teachers to exit the profession, to be replaced by about 300,000 Black Teachers and over 600,000 Latin X teachers. And that’s just to reach the current composition of the student population, not taking into account the projected changes in demographic makeup of the student population in years to come,” (Putman, Hansen, Walsh, Quintero, 2016).
WE MUST RE-IMAGINE EDUCATION TO CREATE A CULTURALLY RELEVANT CLASSROOM.
